What to make for dinner? Make it a Carnation Creation! *Step by step pic recipe!*

I decided to change things up for dinner tonight. How? Well, I am tired of asking ‘What do you want for dinner?’, and resorting to the same old same old meal or a boxed dinner. While I love boxed dinners for the time crunch that a lot of us mommies are on, I had to try something new. I went to www.verybestbaking.com and decided to try out a new recipe.

What do you get when you combine homemade bread with Carnation Milk?

Well, I am thinking of new meals for my family and this is sooo thinking outside of my box, but hey – I wanted to try it! I decided to try the Sunrise Sausage Bake.

I changed a few ingredients (because the kids are picky with their meals and one has a texture issues from veggies – like her mama. LOL) so here is what I did.

Here is the original recipe. This makes a LOT of food, so I would cut in half if you have less mouths to feed.

Honestly, when I saw that Carnation milk was in the recipe, I was a little scared. When I think of Carnation milk (in the can) I think of homemade fudge. I think ‘sweet’. What do you think of? I had NO idea you can make a MEAL out of Carnation Milk, so I had to give it a go.

Here is what I did:

  • 1 can of Carnation Evaporated Milk
  • I made homemade bread, so I sliced 5 slices of bread and cut in to cubes
  • 7 blended eggs
  • Half a package of little smokies, cooked (I put in a small pot and cooked on the stove w/ the lid on)
  • 8 oz freshly grated cheese
  • Sprinkles of onion and garlic powder

I only added one can because I wasn’t sure if the meal would be ‘sweet’. Also, I cut in half just about for the other ingredients. I didn’t want to have enough food to feed the neighborhood. While I like my neighbors, I didn’t want to have to pawn leftovers on them.

I followed the rest of the directions, preheat my ancient oven to 350 degrees, baked in a Corning Ware dish, uncovered, for about 40 minutes.

Here’s my recipe ‘in a nut-shell’, (LOL Pun intended) shown via images. If you like images, then this is the recipe for you. When you buy books, do you buy for the content, or the pictures? I buy for the pictures.

Get some eggies. About 7, or whatever number you prefer. Crack ‘em in a bowl & blend.

Get some Carnation. Pop the top.

Grabbed a few slices of homemade bread, cut in to cubes. If you don’t have time for homemade bread – no biggie! Any bread, loaf, regular, french, bread crumbs, you name it…

I decided to use Little Smokies because I am a sucker for these things. I had to eat a few before I was ‘supposed to’ chop. Yeah – I didn’t CHOP. I decided to use my food processor to chop them for me. Lazy? Nah – creative and a lot less time!

Pretty, huh? I think I saved about 13 minutes just by chopping via food processor.

I took the blended eggs, cubed bread, carnation milk, shredded smokies and shredded cheese and put them all in a baking dish.

Put the dish in the oven on 350 degrees for about 40-45 minutes. I kept checking on it since I do not trust my ancient oven. Once the top was browned nicely, I poked around and it looked like it was done.

Yup! It’s done!

Gorgeous! Wait. I think I hear a knock at the door. Neighbors must have smelled this because it smells amazing!

The kids LOVED the meal!

I am probably the pickiest person in the world. Literally. Ask anyone that knows me. I loved this and will totally be making this and many more Carnation Milk recipes to come!

This reminds me a bit of a quiche, but in a bigger pan. Loved it! Will make it again!

While you may think that Carnation Milk is just for baking, it isn’t! There are so many things that you can COOK with, with Carnation Milk. After all, they do call it ‘The Cooking Milk.’ I ran out of milk that we use for our homemade macaroni & cheese, so I thought I would give Carnation Milk a try. Yummy! Creamy! Love it! Guess what else? Mashed Potatoes! **drooling** I have been using Carnation Milk in all of my ‘regular milk recipes’ this past week and I have been so impressed and I do think I found a new ingredient in my cooking!
