I didn’t think there was anything quite like frosting cookies, making giant messes with the sprinkles, “gluing” eyes and buttons onto goofy gingerbread men and making all other sorts of yummy, delicious, festive treats. Today you can find ideas for whipping up almost anything with your kids, but unfortunately, not many of them are geared for the little, little ones to help with. When Tanya so graciously agreed to allow me to write a piece for Mixin’ Kitchen, I knew I wanted to dedicate a post to holiday treat making that even her little ones could get involved in. If you’ve got your own children that you would love to share some holiday treat-making with, here are a few of my very favorite ideas!

Sugar Cone Trees!

This one is so fun and easy! All you need are sugar waffle cones, a batch of frosting (sample recipe listed below) and a variety of candy. Turn the cones upside down for the kids and give them bowls of frosting (green works best!) and let them have at it! You’ll have instant Christmas trees in no time. Adding on candy for ornaments will add just the right final touch. You can use these guys for décor or eat them as soon as they’re done!

Dipped Marshmallows

Even your three year olds can have fun with this one. All you need are large marshmallows, melting chocolate, wooden food sticks and a variety of fun toppings like sprinkles and candies. Warm the chocolate and place in dunking bowls for your children. Make sure the chocolate is not overly hot so that it’s safe enough if little fingers get dipped too. Kids can place their sticks in the marshmallows and then “dunk” them in the warm chocolate. Finish with a topping of their favorite sprinkles and mini candies. Put a Hershey kiss on top for a hat (attach with a frosting) and a face on the side for extra fun! Not eating the marshmallows when the chocolate is warm and dripping is the hardest part.

S’more Cookies

If your kids are in the mood for making “cookies” but you feel it might be a little advanced, go for “s’more” cookies. There’s still a little time in the oven, so it feels more like baking than the other treat ideas geared for young ones. Have your little ones place graham cracker squares on a cookie sheet and then top them with chocolate chips and holiday colored candies like M&Ms or even red and green Reese’s Pieces. Place the cookie sheets in the oven and allow to “bake” just until the chocolate starts to melt. Remove, and making sure that little hands don’t touch the hot cookie sheets (you can give them back their graham cracker squares on plates), let them top with a layer of mini-marshmallows. Put the crackers back on the cookie sheet and place back in the oven just until the marshmallows start to puff and turn golden brown. You’ll have festive s’more cookies in no time!

Graham Cracker Gingerbread Houses

This is one of my favorite ideas ever! I absolutely loved decorating gingerbread houses as a child (and still do, in fact!) but baking the walls and roofs is time consuming and not much fun. Without having to go buy pre-made packages, you can whip out a box of graham crackers, quickly throw together some royal icing (recipe below) and your little ones have all the ingredients for crafting mini graham cracker “gingerbread houses”! A supply of all your candy on hand will serve for the remaining décor.

Cut-Out “Cookies”

For the little ones anxious to get their hands on cookie cutters, the easiest thing I’ve found to do, rather than mixing up and baking batch after batch of sugar cookies that they won’t be able to help with, is to make Rice Krispies treats instead. While still warm, just after stirring in the marshmallows, place onto a large sheet of waxed paper and roll out thin. Then hand off the cookie cutters and let your little guys go to town (works better before they harden)! They can even frost and decorate just like sugar cookies.

Holiday Wreath Snacks

Instead of using Rice Krispies, you can switch out the Krispies for Corn Flakes. Add a drop or two of green food coloring into the butter/marshmallow mix and make like normal. Then spoon out large helpings of the mixture onto waxed paper and let your little ones shape into circles with holes in the middle (let cool slightly before they touch). Then they can decorate with red hot candies and thin red licorice strings (tied in bows) to make fun and festive holiday wreaths.

Basic Icing Recipe

4 cups powered sugar

4-5 Tablespoons milk

1 teaspoon vanilla

Combine sugar and milk, blend on low speed. Add vanilla, continue blending until completely mixed. Add more liquid or sugar to reach desired consistency.

These are just a few of the many ideas available for young children and holiday sugar-y fun! So go grab your kids, turn on the Christmas music, pour everyone a mug of hot cocoa (with marshmallows) and have some fun together making yummy, easy holiday treats!

My favorites are the Spaghetti & Meatballs and Mini Ravioli and Kambry’s favorite is the Mini Spaghetti & Meatballs and Mini Ravioli as well.
I love to cook, but there are times where I just don’t have the time to spend three hours on a meal that will take 5 seconds for the family to eat. While I love to eat Chef Boyardee just as they are, I had no idea that you could make quick and full family meals just from something like a lasagna bake from Chef Boyardee Ravioli or a casserole dish with pepperoni, cheese, milk, and Chef Boyardee spaghetti.

Pepperoni Spaghetti Bake

Ingredients

PAM® Original No-Stick Cooking Spray

1-1/4 cups original baking mix

1/2 cup reduced fat (2%) milk

2 can (14.5 oz each) Chef Boyardee® Spaghetti & Meatballs

3/4 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese, divided

1/3 cup sliced turkey pepperoni

Directions

Preheat oven to 375°F. Spray 13×9-inch glass baking dish with cooking spray. Combine baking mix and milk in medium bowl; stir until soft dough forms.

Drop dough by spoonfuls on bottom of baking dish (will not completely cover bottom). Spoon 1 can spaghetti and meatballs over dough and sprinkle with 1/2 cup cheese. Top with remaining can spaghetti and meatballs, remaining 1/4 cup cheese and pepperoni.

Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until dough is done in centers and browned.

Cook’s Tips

Add your favorite pizza toppings, if desired. Get the kids involved with preparation; they can prepare the dough, layer the ingredients and top the dish with pepperoni.

I love to make casserole dishes and one of my favorites, as is the kids’, is a pasta bake with cheese, pepperoni and different shaped noodles. When I saw one of the Chef Boyardee Recipes used Chef Boyardee Spaghetti, I knew it was something that I wanted to try out. To my surprise, everyone in my family really liked it. Instead of making dough from scratch, we decided to drop in refrigerated biscuit dough, then sprinkled grated parmesan on top of the mozzarella cheese just before we baked it.

Looks pretty yummy, doesn’t it? It was! Another recipe that I am excited to try is the Ravioli Lasagna. Now that I have seen that you can make actual dishes with Chef Boyardee, I will be letting the creative juices flowing for some more yummy recipe ideas. I think it would be a good combination to add a can of Chef Boyardee Ravioli to the Pepperoni Spaghetti Bake to add different textures to the casserole.

With BlogHer ‘11 coming up, I am adding some of the smaller sized microwave meals to my suitcase. Anytime I travel, I like to buy or take my own snacks to help save on eating out costs. At under a buck a piece, this is what I call savvy and smart planning on any budget. Too bad I can’t pack a casserole in my carry on otherwise I’d totally do it. LOL

Today, I decided to try these bad boys out by making grilled min pizzas.

Super easy, super fast and super yummy!

Since our stove is out of commission for another week I used my countertop grill to make grilled personal pizzas.

I used:

1 package of Bobeli pizza sauce

Sliced smoked honey ham sandwich meat

1 package of 5 grain flax Foldit Flatbread

Mozzarella cheese; grated

First, I grilled each side of the flat bread to make the inside crispy, then I put grated cheese, pizza sauce, cut ham (you can use anything for toppings).

Just this month, Log Cabin made a major announcement that a long-time favorite family tradition is finally recognized as Log Cabin Syrup declared Wednesdays “Breakfast for Dinner” Day! A fun, fast and affordable way to get everyone together on a busy weeknight, Breakfast for Dinner is a great way for families to take time out together despite the demands of their busy schedules.

Log Cabin is the first and only brand that has eliminated high fructose corn syrup, so this is an updated meal tradition that families can feel good about.

Do you have those brands that you remember growing up with? I remember so many specific brands that my mother used to buy for macaroni & cheese, biscuits and even syrup. For the syrup, I clearly remember my mother only buying one brand; Log Cabin. When I was asked to check out some new sugar free and gluten free Log Cabin Syrup, I was excited to try them out!

We received:

Log Cabin Sugar Free Syrup

Log Cabin Lite Reduced Calorie Gluten Free Syrup

Log Cabin Original Gluten Free Syrup

I am inviting you, my readers, to join my family and families around the country with a fun Breakfast for Dinner of their own on Wednesdays! Here are some fun new family breakfast traditions survey results that you might like!

Breakfast a la Mom

Don’t tell Paula Deen, but she came in third… Mom may not have a show on the Food Network, but she runs the show at her own house. Outranking Rachel Ray (22%) and Paula Deen (15%), Mom is the top pick for America’s favorite breakfast chef with 42 percent preferring that she make the first meal of the day at their houses.

Please Pass the Conversation

Talking with your mouth full: A delightful surprise! Modern families continue to make conversation over their morning meal. Eighty-eight percent of Americans talk to each other over breakfast, outnumbering those who watch TV (63%) or read a newspaper or magazine (51%) or use an iPad/mobile device (35%).

Logging on when chowing down: It’s no surprise that the younger crowd checks in online in the morning more than their elders. 47 percent of Americans ages 18-34 use an iPad, check email, send texts or talk on the phone during breakfast, twice as many as those ages 55-64 (23 percent).

You are What You Eat

More than half of those polled stated they make a conscious effort to choose breakfast options they feel good about for themselves and their families (56 percent), with nearly half (49 percent) stating they are trying to remove high fructose corn syrup from their family’s diet.

Keeping Breakfast Warm in the Winter

On a cold winter’s day, two thirds of Americans enjoy their breakfasts with syrup, whether it’s warm cereal and oatmeal or pancakes and waffles.

Brrrr! Why be cold both inside and out? Only 11 percent prefer a quick bowl of cold cereal or breakfast bar in the winter.

Dress Code

Dressed to impress: Men are more likely to be dressed and ready to go while eating breakfast (40 percent) than women (27 percent).

Been practicing for years! Those who are older have their system down pat when it comes to a breakfast routine. Those ages 65 and up were more likely to have a routine for breakfast (73 percent) versus those ages 18-34 (58 percent).

Please Pass the Pancakes, Mr. President!

A patriot start to your day — 43 percent of Americans would most like to have the Obamas over to share breakfast for dinner – more so than the Kardashians (10 percent); the Beckhams (6 percent) and the Brangelina clan (5 percent) combined!

Ending the Day Right

Americans can’t wait to get a head start on tomorrow — 77 percent of households have breakfast for dinner, and 60 percent eat breakfast for dinner at least once a month.

First in Line

Age before hunger – The Dad or male head of household and the youngest child in the family have an equal chance at getting the first pancake or waffle at their house (25 percent) while only 8 percent of households give the first pancake or waffle to the oldest child.

Why Mess with a Classic?

The majority of households prefer to stand by their classic, favorite recipes (61 percent), while 22 percent make it a top priority to update their favorite recipes to make them interesting to their modern family, such as substituting orange juice for vegetable oil or sneaking pureed carrots into their kids’ Mac N’ Cheese!

Feel-Good Food

More than half of those polled stated they make a conscious effort to choose breakfast options they feel good about for themselves and their families (56 percent), with nearly half (49 percent) stating they are trying to remove high fructose corn syrup from their family¹s diet.

Do you like breakfast at any meal? We sure do! I would say that we have breakfast for dinner more than we have breakfast for .. well… breakfast!

One thing that I received, and I am madly in love with the Valentine Candy Making Kit!

Price: $9.99

Here is my experience with the Valentine Candy Making Kit:

I will be honest and say that I have tried candy making in the past, but it was a huge flop, so I never tried it again. I was doing it in the old fashioned way where you melt the candies in the pan and it was a huge mess, and pain! Wilton makes it so easy and fun with their kits, as well as their website has tons of helpful tips to help your baking be more fun.

I started by filling the enclosed decorating bags with some Wilton candy melts, I put all 4 in a bowl in the microwave, then melted the candies to the perfect consistency.

I cut the tips off the bags, then started to fill the candy molds.

Once I filled in the hearts with red & pink (or whatever colors you choose), I filled the rest in with the white candy melt.

This is what it looked like from the bottom. Very pretty!

On one mold, I put some Valentine sprinkles in just before I filled with the melted candy.

Once you get your candy molds filled up, put them in the fridge to chill, then you can pop them out very easily!

I lifted the sprinkle candy up too soon, so it had lines in it, but overall, they all turned out very pretty! You can trim the edges for a cleaner look.

We also made cupcakes; strawberry! For the icing, we used Wilton’s Pink/White Striped Icing and used the Pink Damask Valentine Combo Pack (cupcake papers with cute heat picks for the top), and gifted them in Valentine Treat Boxes.

The Family Dish is aimed at encouraging families to spend quality time together in the kitchen cooking together. Between school, after school activities, chaotic weekends, doctor visits, post holiday adventures and trying to regain my sanity, the last thing I want to think about is what to make for dinner.

I love to make chili. It doesn’t have to be cold out to enjoy a hot bowl of chili. Here’s a recipe that I tried and love! I like the plain style chili, so I was kinda hesitant to try this, but if you read the ingredients… YUM!

Ingredients

1-1/2 lbs. ground beef, browned

1 can (16 oz.) red kidney beans, rinsed and drained

1 jar (1 lb. 10 oz.) Ragu® Old World Style® Pasta Sauce

1 envelope Lipton® Recipe Secrets® Beefy Onion Soup Mix

4 tsp. chili powder

I used homemade pinto beans, verses canned. I usually just use plain-Jane tomato sauce, so trying Ragu in my chili was a great change!

We had leftovers, so for New Years snacks, we made queso. The kids loved it! We used leftover chili in it, and added in a block of Velveeta and some milk so it wouldn’t be too thick.

Another thing that I love to make with leftover Ragu is meatball subs!

I have known about Wilton my entire life, grew up with Wilton products and baking with my family, and in June, I even learned a few things about cake decorating and I even managed to surprise myself. This summer, I met and I learned about Wilton as a company, I was taught a few things about Wilton’s products and learned quite a bit about the art of decorating. It isn’t just about the cake itself, but it’s about those memories that one creates while making that sweet creation. I will be blunt with you all and tell you that I am not the best cake decorator, nor will I ever claim to be the best. My creations are fun, but most of all, create memories that will stick with my family.

Last weekend, I was able to get hands on look at cookies, fun treats and how to do so many different things with a nice variety of products for any occasion.

I do believe that I found my calling. . . . . Cookie decorating.

Two words that make my heart go pitter patter: Color Flow.

I have always wanted to decorate cookies, but most of all; I have simply wanted to have presentable treats. Wilton has a product that is called “Cookie Flow” icing. This product had me at hello! I still cannot stop thinking about this product. I cannot stop dreaming about the endless possibilities that this product entails for not only my family, but for yours as well.

I am horrible at decorating. I have painted ceramics and t-shirts with my mother as a kid, but I was never able to ice a cookie to save my life. Literally.

Color Flow Mix

Create dimensional flow-in designs for your cake. Just add water and confectioners’ sugar. Certified Kosher. 4 oz. can makes ten 1 1/2 cup batches.

Color Flow Mix: $7.49

There is a great recipe idea here.

Want to see how easy and amazing this product is? Here are some pictures and videos to show you my VERY FIRST experience with Color Flow.

Looks easy, doesn’t it? Guess what? It IS!

Pictures can only show so much, so here’s a video of my first try with Color Flow Icing:

Here are some tips from what I learned:

Roll out your dough on sheet using lollipop sticks as your thickness guide under the rolling pin so that the dough is the sane thickness all around for level cookies.

Use a cookie cutter to cut out shape, but leave cutter on dough and use to sprinkle sprinkles in to, so you don’t waste sprinkles, take cutter off, and you have your sprinkled cookie – bake for about 7-8 minutes.

The Cookie Press is perfect for spritz cookies! Simply fill the cookie press with dough, (do not refrigerate dough otherwise dough will end up too hard to use in spritzer). Tip: Make the dough just before you are ready to make spritz cookies, do not refrigerate so that the dough is the perfect temperature and consistency to work with.

Want to make cookies, such as a perfect gingerbread cookie? For Iced sugar cookies, like I show above, use Color Flow, full consistency for the outlining and use thin to fill, in zig-zag motions and use a toothpick to draw from center of cookie towards outline.

What if you have an event that you would love to take some treats to, but are scared about your icing getting messed up? Once you finish your cookie creation, the icing will set dry and hard within a few minutes, but you will need to wait at least overnight for it to completely set dry so that you will be able to package the cookies up for presentation, gifting or just to travel with.

Looking to add a bit more to your cookies? Use piping gel as ‘glue’ to drizzle on the cookie, and dip cookie in sprinkles to hold on to the treat.

Looks yummy and pretty, doesn’t it?? I was amazed how easy it was to create so many different things. The Chocolate Pro Electric Chocolate Melter sure made for easy cookie decorating! It’s not just for candy making or even dipping strawberries in, cookies are a great addition to use for this.

I’m sure that people this weekend wanted to tell me to put a sock in my mouth to shut me up about how much I loved Color Flow Icing & even the Chocolate Pro Electric Chocolate (or candy!) Melter products, but seriously – I am in love! I am so eager, so happy, so excited to try this out with my kids and family. With this holidays, I’ve always wanted to make holiday treats to take to the family’s’ house, but have been scared to. I know that treats aren’t necessarily about appearance, but for one – just once – id love to woo people with something out of the ordinary.

Gingerbread men? Oh, it’s ON this year! My mind is flowing, the thought images are pouring and pretty soon, my family will be telling me to put a sock in it because i cannot seem to stop the ideas from finding me.

Are you excited about the holidays now? I am!!! I have so many ideas and thoughts running through my head about what I can make this year!

For more information and to go to a Wilton Decorating Class near you, please log on to www.wilton.com to find a location near you that offers classes. You will learn so much, have so much fun and trust me – these classes and products will make you as eager as I am to learn more and get to decorating for the holidays!

Our thoughts on Boboli Grilled Pizza?

Oh boy – Oh boy! I love the taste of the Boboli pizza, but there’s something about grilling out to make it taste just that much better! Here are some pictures to show you what I am not able to describe in words, other than ‘oh my yummy!’

Yes, I use scissors in my kitchen. We use them for everything from cutting meat, to pancakes. Huge time saver!

I thought the packaging was cool!! It had easy steps on how to get started grilling pizza.

I used Crisco’s Light Olive Oil to brush on the back of the pizza crust, just before putting on the grill.

Once grilled for about 5 minutes, the crust looked beautiful and oh, so tasty looking!

We put all the toppings on top; Boboli Sauce, pepperoni, cut up ham (we used thin sandwich ham that we had in the freezer) and topped with mozzarella cheese and fresh oregano.

We put on the grill for about 8 minutes.

Looks good, doesn’t it? Believe me – it was!

I can say that rain, snow or shine, we will always grill our pizza out on the grill. This was so much fun, less mess in the kitchen, my house didn’t heat up from using the oven and it was delicious!

Our cost for the pizzas really wasn’t as much as I thought it would be. We had fun, as a family, to make the pizzas together and to sit down and eat together. These days, with all of our busy schedules, we make time any chance that we get to all have a sit down meal together. With Boboli Pizza, you are able to have fun together, make your own pizza creations and sit down as a family… or even as a friendly get together to enjoy some time out of the kitchen. This brought my family so much enjoyment to have been able to hang out outside, grill pizza and not have to heat up or mess up the kitchen. Every family needs some down time, but hey – you still want to feed your family, so try grilling a pizza! Trust me, you will have fun!

Love pouring warm breakfast syrup on a stack of fluffy pancakes, but not the sticky residue it leaves behind on the bottle’s cap? You’re not alone!

The makers of Hungry Jack® Syrup and Pancake Mix have introduced a redesigned syrup cap that keeps the syrup on your plate and off the bottle. Directly prompted by customer feedback fielded by the brand, the Hungry Jack “smiley face” syrup cap skips the drip of other syrup bottle caps and allows for a more controlled pour of syrup.

How cute is this???

The new cap is available now on all varieties of Hungry Jack Microwavable Syrups, including Regular, Butter, Lite, Sugar Free Breakfast Syrup and Butter Lite.

We would like to offer you and your readers a sample of the new easy-pouring Hungry Jack Syrup cap so everyone can brighten breakfast with a smile. We can send you one Hungry Jack Pancake Party Kit to enjoy with your friends and family, review on your blogs and offer up to three additional kits to give away to your readers.

The lid, above, is adorable, isn’t it?? I grew up with Hungry Jack. This ranges from flaky biscuits to syrup. To this day, I still refuse to buy store brand biscuits, I only buy flaky Hungry Jack biscuits. This is all my grandmother would buy for us. I think I eat them out of memory for spending the summers with her, but also because they are mouthwatering and my favorite biscuits ever!

When we received the Hungry Jack Pancake Party Kit, I was excited because we make pancakes on a flat pan, but the smiley face pan sure made it more fun for the kids.

The pan was so much fun! I had a hard time with it at first, but I have never used a mold pan like this before. It was easy, it was fun, the kids loved it! Of course, topping with extras like Apple Butter, Jif peanut butter, Hungry Jack syrup… made it so much better!

No, they aren’t burnt.

I love that the Hungry Jack syrup comes in a container that you can put in the microwave.

I love that the Hungry Jack syrup has a heat indicator.

I love that the smiley face is not only cute to look at in the lid, but functional as well.
